Rated 2.0 This mind-numbing suspense thriller from commercial/music video veteran Tarsem Singh (he shot R.E.M.'s “Losing My Religion”) is the most visually intoxicating and repellent film of the year. Tarsem’s “graphic opera” about the roots of evil and all things sick and twisted (including a hand-cranked disembowelment) is a sort of Silence of the Lambs meets Dreamscape saturated with Calvin Klein aesthetics. Jennifer Lopez stars as a researcher who uses a “neurological synaptic transfer system” to enter the mind of a comatose serial killer (Vincent D’Onofrio) to find the whereabouts of his latest hostage. The result is a vacuous marriage of lush surrealism and grisly horror.
