Carly Hennessy

Ever wonder what two million bucks sounds like when it’s flushed down a toilet? This unremarkable pop album, released last November, was the subject of a front-page article in the February 26 Wall Street Journal. It cost $2.2 million to make and market, yet it sold a mere 378 copies over three months. MCA Records, angling to cash in on Britneymania, plucked child star Hennessy, 18, from her native Ireland three years ago and put her up in a Marina Del Rey apartment, then blew $350K cutting an album with Celine Dion’s producer, then scrapped all but one song. Then MCA hooked Hennessy up with New Radicals’ Gregg Alexander and former child actress Danielle Brisebois (Archie Bunker’s Place). Occasionally great art emerges from such crassly conceived origins, but not here. How clueless? The first single, “I’m Gonna Blow Your Mind,” alludes to the kind of behavior that got Monica Lewinsky in trouble. Flush!
