Despite being “[b]orn in a taxi on Yoyogi Street in Tokyo,” John Yoyogi Fortes found his way to Sacramento, as have the other artists in Axis Gallery's Art in Motion exhibition. Fortes, Omar Thor Arason, Anne Gregory and Craig Martinez all have lived or worked in the capital city (some still do) and all have diverse contemporary styles, but with the show's name and Fortes' origin story, it would make more sense if Arason was born on a ship, Gregory on a plane and Martinez on a train, and day jobs as professors and videographers only mask their superpowers of making amazing art.
