Bear market

I always like to see new independent coffeehouses opening up, especially when they’re close to my house. Lately, I’ve been enjoying the new Sargent’s House of Coffee—a little spot where the old Red Square creperie used to be. Inside, it’s been redone to be brighter and more cheerful than it was as Red Square and they make a nice strong java; they are roasters, as well as having a retail operation. They get pastries from Bennett’s, and they’re friendly as can be. A particular charm comes from the logo, which features a picture of a man with bear cubs on his head (yes, really). It’s from a family photo of the owner’s grandfather, who captured the bears in Washington state years ago. You won’t see that at the great big coffee chain that also comes from Washington state.
