The Family Media Guide measures Oscar-nominated flicks in another way. The Web site—run by a Hollywood company called PSV Ratings (the letters stand for profanity, sex and violence) and found on the Internet at www.familymediaguide.com—tallies how much sex, smoking, fighting and cursing appears in each of the films nominated by Oscar for Best Picture.

They actually counted the occurrences of the word “fuck,” which, thanks to the 99 utterances in the movie Crash this year, proved quite a challenge. The chain-smoking Edward R. Murrow also provided a big dose of onscreen nicotine this year.
