A year of Avid reading

First Anniversary Celebration

Sunday marks the first anniversary of The Avid Reader at the Tower. Which means that in the era of mind-sucking reality television, you, dear readers, are radical: You’re not afraid to pick up a book once in a while. And thus, the bookstore has stayed afloat in the building formerly known as Tower Books. The Avid, an offshoot of the 20-year-old Davis bookstore, will celebrate its first year of business with a series of six NorCal-centric readings: Cheryll Cochrane and Gloria Knopke read from the Junior League of Sacramento’s Celebrate! Cookbook; columnist Daniel Weintraub will read from Party of One: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rise of the Independent Voter; coauthor Roger McGehee will read from California Native Plant Society’s Wildflowers of Nevada and Placer Counties; William R. Hildebrandt, co-author of Life on the River, will discuss an archaeological dig along the banks of the upper Sacramento River; local author Tom Jones will read from his first book, Working at the Ballpark; and Jordan Summers will read from 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Sacramento. Refreshments and kid-friendly activities provided.

Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m. The Avid Reader at the Tower; 1600 Broadway; (916) 441-4400.
