Hurricane, The

Rated 3.0 This is the true story of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was imprisoned for a murder he did not commit. It comes to the screen with some major fictional stretches, and a powerhouse performance from Denzel Washington in the title role. The film, directed by Norman Jewison, feels a bit too simple for such a complex story, but Washington transcends the problems to provide his best acting since Malcolm X. It’s his portrayal that makes this an ultimately moving experience. What would be even more interesting would be a film chronicling Carter’s life after his release from prison.
