The price of education

Buying all the new supplies and outfits for a new school year is a fun time for students. But it puts a pretty big hole in their parents’ pocketbooks, based on numbers from the National Retail Federation. In 2007, total back-to-school sales were expected to reach $18.4 billion. Here’s how that breaks down, on average, per student:

CategoriesAmount spentPercent change since last year
Clothing/ accessories$231.800%
Electronics$129.94+13%
Shoes$108.42+10%
School supplies$94.02+9%
Total$563.49+7%
