The Devil Wears Prada

Rated 3.0

Based on the thinly veiled tell-all novelization of Lauren Weisberger’s stint at Vogue, young journalism grad Andy (Anne Hathaway) moves to the Big Apple to make her mark on the world but gets reeled into being our fish-out-of-water protagonist after being hired on as an assistant to the editor of the massively influential fashion magazine Runway. The editor of course is the vile creature suggested by the title of the film and is convincingly evinced by Meryl Streep in full-on sharp fangs, over-the-top mode, a virago who doesn’t suffer fools or lesser people (i.e. everyone else) lightly. Although the script really doesn’t bring anything fresh to the show, there is enough distracting flurry to keep one occupied, with Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt having fun with their stereotypical characters, and enough cruel lines and bitchiness to carry one through the formulistic resolution.
