Taking it to the streets

Chico State students protest building of a parking structure

A group of Chico State students stand at the corner of Second and Normal streets Tuesday afternoon (May 3) to protest planned construction of a parking structure near campus that is slated to cost $14 million. “We have learned through our education at Chico State that there are better, more efficient ways of getting around [than automobiles],” said Jessica Ulvang (bottom left), “and if our trustees were to build a parking structure and try to encourage us to drive, it would contradict our education at our so-called nationally recognized sustainable school.” The group, Wildcats Against Parking Structure, put the question to fellow students by asking on last month’s Associated Students election ballot whether they support the structure. The answer was overwhelmingly (76 percent) no. Search for WAPS on Facebook to find out more.
