Strangers With Candy

Rated 3.0

One of those comedies where if you’re not in on the joke, you’re left wondering what the fundamental aspect of the joke is. In this prequel to the cult TV series of the same name, Amy Sedaris (sister of author David) creates a truly perverse character by the name of Jerri Blank, a gargoyle of an ex-con that after 30-odd (very odd) years of institutionalization finds herself on the doorstep of the family home, sucker-punched by the news that her mother has died and her father is in a stress-induced coma. What to do? Nothing less than return to high school and pick up where she left off before being sucked into the swirling black vortex of drug dependency and cheap thrills. But some old habits are hard to shake. Co-written by Daily Show/Colbert Report satirist, and all-around American hero, Stephen Colbert, and featuring a buttload of cameos from unexpected quarters. Amusing in a WTF? sort of way.
