Scoopin’ the competition

Chico State sustainability group wins award for its consulting efforts

A Chico State group that focuses on sustainability won first place for a student project during a recent California State University system conference for facilities management.

The students of SCOOP (Sustainable Consultations of Office Practices) bested universities including UC Berkeley and Stanford by preparing a presentation of their project’s intent, goals and results.

Acting as consultants, the students assess campus offices and make recommendations for improvements. They evaluate computers, printers and other equipment, as well as energy use and recycling.

Sandy Miskella of University Public Events said it took the students less than an hour to evaluate her office, and the visit resulted in good insight. “I would recommend an energy audit for every department on campus,” she said.
