Sac County denying aid to the poor?

County accused of denying medical coverage to poor

Legal Services of Northern California has filed a lawsuit in Superior Court against Sacramento County for allegedly denying medical aid to the poor.

The suit claims the county is violating state law by denying medical care through the County Medically Indigent Services Program to General Assistance (GA) applicants as they wait for GA-grant approval, according to The Sacramento Bee. Applicants often have to wait for up to a month during the application process to receive any primary medical care.

Amy Williams, an attorney for Legal Services of Northern California, charges the county does not properly evaluate what constitutes an urgent need because the decisions are made by non-medical personnel. The county maintains it hasn’t wrongfully withheld any medical services and is in compliance with the law.
