Robots Hate Cowboys

Robots Hate Cowboys

One of the more unique releases to emerge from the local indie-rock scene in years, Robots Hate Cowboys’ instrumental debut shifts through moods like a pit bull after a belly full of discarded Zoloft samples.

The duo consists of talented drummer Candice Armenta and equally impressive electric bassist Andy Cose, both of whom embrace elements of punk, college rock and blues in their rambunctious, math rock style. For instance, the bouncy, reverberating opening of “Tommy Lee” quickly turns inward, creeping into a dirge-like introspection as if delving beneath the pop culture layers of the maligned, metal has-been turned porn trivia question.

There are only six songs here, mostly barreling, intricate jams that highlight the solid interplay and instinctual musical rapport developed between Armenta and Cose in the live setting. The pair constantly juggles different time signatures, expertly handled by the rhythmically adept Armenta (check out her muscle on “Flux Capacitor”). The crisp electric moods shift like the seasons, from molasses-paced, dark and dreary winters to wildly playful, blinding hot summers. Catch them live if you get the chance.
