Fish and Game opens limited salmon season

Anglers looking to finally be able to pull in salmon will have a very limited opportunity come mid-month. As promised last April, the Department of Fish and Game has opened up a small season for Central Valley chinook salmon between Nov. 16 and Dec. 31.

However, there are some serious caveats for anglers. First, fishing is confined to the Sacramento River between the Highway 113 bridge at Knights Landing and a spot 150 feet below the Lower Red Bluff (Sycamore) Boat Ramp. Second, the daily limit is one fish.

All other regions of the river, plus the Feather, American and San Joaquin rivers and their tributaries, will remain closed to salmon fishing.

This season will provide access to late-fall chinook, which are not listed as threatened or endangered. The short window is scheduled for a time after the fall-run fish have migrated upriver and before the winter run takes place.
