A large-scale development and resort project proposed for Lassen County is being challenged by several environmental groups.

Sierra Club, along with Mountain Meadows Conservancy and Sierra Watch, filed a lawsuit in Lassen County Superior Court last week, aiming to overturn the county’s recent approval of the resort at Dyer Mountain based on alleged violations of the California Environmental Quality Act.

The lawsuit’s petitioners claim the project has grown dramatically since 2000, when voters gave it the OK. According to Sierra Watch, the plans ballooned from 1,000 houses and a ski resort to 4,000 homes, three golf courses and a ski resort.

Dyer Mountain is the ancestral home of the Honey Lake Maidu tribe and provides habitat to important wildlife such as the bald eagle.
