Husband charged in wife’s killing

Zir Weems arrested, charged with murder for death of Angelica Weems

Last week, Butte County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Zir Ion Weems, 29, in connection to the death of his wife, 23-year-old Angelica Weems. Angelica was reported missing on Sept. 13 after she and Zir had taken a walk together in Willows. Zir (pictured) was found later that day with reportedly self-inflicted cuts to his arms. He was then arrested on charges of animal cruelty for the death of his dog, which had been left tied to a tree at his grandmother’s house in Willows.

Following a lengthy search by law enforcement, Angelica’s family found her body on the east side of the Sacramento River on Oct. 5. Butte County officials ruled her death a homicide but no arrest was made until Nov. 25, when Zir posted bail in Glenn County for the animal cruelty case. He was immediately arrested by Butte County sheriff’s detectives, according to a BCSO press release. He was charged Dec. 1 with murder and is being held without bail in Butte County Jail. The couple’s four children are being cared for by family.
