Green books, eh?

When it comes to eco-friendly reads, America’s neighbors to the north have their shelves full.

A recent study by the Green Press Initiative and the Book Industry Study Group listed Canada as the leader in eco-friendly book production. Sixty to 70 percent of Canadian publishers print their books on recycled paper, compared to 50 percent of U.S. publishers.

Raincoast Books, located in Vancouver, helped Canada achieve this feat by being the lone publisher among 54 others worldwide to print Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on 100 percent recycled paper.

The Book Industry Study Group and the Green Press Initiative are hoping to improve the environmental impact of the book industry, which the organizations claim consumes 1.2 million tons of paper per year.
