Four in 10 Americans are creationists

Believe God created humans about 10,000 years ago

Despite the virtually unanimous view among scientists that human beings evolved over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, four in 10 Americans continue to believe God created them in their present form about 10,000 years ago, according to a December 2010 Gallup Poll.

Nearly as many, 38 percent, believe humans evolved over time but that God guided this process. Only 16 percent believe we evolved over time and God had no part in the process.

As the chart shows, slightly fewer people believe in strict creationism today than in 1982 (40 percent to 44 percent), and slightly more see no sign of God’s intervention in the process (16 percent to 9 percent), but otherwise Americans’ views on evolution have been remarkably stable over the years.
