Matador DVD

Sure enough, fans of Glasgow’s finest orchestral pop group, the limp-wristed and literary Belle & Sebastian, will love this two-hour-plus collection of live performances, videos, Super 8 home movies, foreign television appearances and interviews. Tracing the band’s career from its inception in 1995, this scrapbook-style DVD follows concerts through historic theaters and outdoor festivals in Brazil, Japan and Europe, intermixing home movies (grainy country picnics) that reveal the romantic world of lead singer Stuart Murdoch and his soft-spoken, vegetarian mates. Highlights include: live footage from the 2002 Coachella festival in Indio, Calif., and Sessions at West 54th Street in New York; a version of Os Mutantes’ “Baby” live from the Free Jazz Festival in Rio de Janeiro; a ’60s-style video for the song “Jonathan David”; impromptu covers of “Rhinstone Cowboy” and “The Kids are Alright”; plus a quirky interview and performance on a Brazilian chat show. Cutesy fun for “Bowlies” and “over 30” pop lovers everywhere.
