Eco group: River at risk

Sacramento River is again named one of nation’s most endangered

Once again, the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is one of the nation’s top 10 imperiled rivers. That’s the word from American Rivers, a Washington, D.C.-based conservation organization, which this week named California’s largest river as No. 2 in its “most endangered rivers” list.

Last year, the river took the top spot in the ranking. (The group named the Upper Delaware River as No. 1 this year.)

Plans to re-engineer the river system threaten to drain the system of more water and halt floodplain restoration, says the organization, which calls on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to rectify the situation.
