College adds to green theme

Portland State University is adding to its home city’s green reputation by hiring a number of professors with expertise in sustainability.

University administrators expect 10 such educators will be placed into various departments by the start of the next academic year. According to The Oregonian, funding for the new faculty will come from the Legislature’s $2 million bump to PSU’s budget tied specifically to the recruitment and retention of faculty. About half of the money will be used for the positions; the rest for other hires.

PSU already employs several dozen professors with expertise in sustainable development. The university is also home to several eco-themed programs, as well as its Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices.
