Chico, occupied

More than 100 local protesters join the Occupy Wall Street movement

The Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City have spread across the country, and Chico was not left out of the action on Saturday (Oct. 1) as an estimated 130 folks took to downtown in a show of disdain for the corporate greed they say has ravaged the economy along with countless citizens. “There are people all over the world, all over the country all over the state, all over this community, that aren’t happy with the way things are right now. We want change and we’re trying to express that,” said Jayme Beres (pictured, wearing a mask), an organizer who put up a Facebook event post just three days earlier. “I asked if anybody would be here with me if I was standing by myself … and this is what happened. It’s in the collective subconscious, I think, of Americans right now that we want change.” The protesters gathered at Second and Wall streets and marched through downtown. The plan is to keep the momentum going each Saturday with demonstrations.
