Celebrating King’s dream

Crowd gathers in downtown Chico to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday

About 150 people gathered Sunday (Jan. 14) in downtown Chico to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday (Jan. 15). The theme of this year’s event, which started at the City Plaza, traveled to Trinity United Methodist Church and finished with a community dinner, was “Unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” Vince Haynie, who emcee’d the event with his wife, Kesha, spoke about justice as being part of the gospel. He also unveiled a new group that sprang from the Justice for Desmond Phillips effort named Concerned Citizens for Justice.
