Accepted is a welcome return to the ’80s style of teen comedy, one devoid of the frat-boy ethos that permeates contemporary comedies like the stench of a dirty—ahem, used—gym sock (i.e. anything featuring the current Frat Pack). High school senior slacker extraordinaire Bartleby (Justin Long) finds himself with a pile of college rejections upon graduation, and schemes with his fellow rejects to create a virtual college to fool the folks into thinking that they’re not just a bunch of losers. Of course, things get out of hand and they find themselves running the full-on campus equivalent of Animal House, complete with a smug bunch of WASP knobs that want to harsh their mellow. Nothing unexpected here aside from the fact that the film consistently delivers with the laughs in a low-key but clever enough way. Also features comedian Lewis Black as the dean.
