Grow your own

Is it time for cornucopia references already?

Is it time for cornucopia references already?

Mention a harvest day and an image of a cornucopia immediately comes to mind. Now suppose you could fill it with sustainable fruits and vegetables grown in your own home garden. But for anyone establishing their own sustainable home garden, a keen understanding of the basics is necessary: creating compost, improving soils, identifying poisonous plants. At Harvest Day 2009, local horticultural experts will be on hand to provide that understanding. More than 30 booths will offer information about how to maintain a river-friendly landscape, grow tomatoes and join local gardening clubs. The free event will be August 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fair Oaks Horticulture Center, 11540 Fair Oaks Boulevard in Fair Oaks.
