Some like it hot

Maintaining a drought-friendly garden doesn’t mean planting a yard full of prickly cactus.

Maintaining a drought-friendly garden doesn’t mean planting a yard full of prickly cactus.

As the Earth heats up and the economy plummets, people must adapt—and that includes their home gardens. Luscious green grasses and thirsty flowers adorning gardens are ideals of the past. Fortunately, reducing water consumption doesn’t mean giving up on green entirely. A free guided tour of water-smart plants, many of them green and drought tolerant, will be held Saturday, July 18 at 10 a.m. at the UC Davis Arboretum gazebo on Garrod Drive in Davis.
