We urge Gov. Jerry Brown to sign the plastic-bag ban

We did it!

Correction: We’re close!

California is poised to become the first state in the country to ban single-use bags at major grocery stores.

Both houses of the state Legislature passed a bill last week that would prohibit bags, and now Gov. Jerry Brown has until September 30 to sign it into law. Our gut says he’ll likely ink it, and we urge him to do so.

It’s 2014. More than ever, we need to be good stewards to the environment. This means not just eliminating items like single-use plastic bags from our lives, but also being responsible for the life cycle of so many consumer items that end up in landfills and waterways like batteries, prescription drugs, oil and paint.

Banning plastic bags, and therefore making it a habit for consumers to bring reusable canvas-type bags to the supermarket, is a smart law that changes people’s habits for the positive.

SN&R looks forward to more green-friendly legislation that will sustain this beautiful Golden State for years to come.
