The B Sexuals
Ceci N’est Pas Un Band
This “band” is not made of rubber, but it sometimes seems like it, with a folkabilly sound that springs and stings but also stays tight. The B Sexuals have been playing shows in the area for several years now, and though this debut release doesn’t capture their live energy, it has a well-produced polish. Added layers of depth nicely flesh out the duo’s spare arrangement of Phil Goodwin’s acoustic guitar and voice and Mike Conroy’s stripped-down drum kit. Their minimalist rock and catchy songwriting bring to mind influences as diverse as Elvis, the Pixies and Violent Femmes, and range from jarring to serene. Goodwin’s staccato delivery of the intriguing, cryptic lyrics keeps reminding you there’s more than meets the ear.
