The American Analog Set

This six-song EP clocks in at under a half-hour. It isn’t a proper release by this Austin, Texas-based quintet; instead it’s a textural reinvention of older tracks. “Desert Eagle [All I Want for Christmas Mix]” takes three minutes to whisper itself out of the starting gate; “These Days” [AmAnSet Keyboard Mix]” is an enervated but oddly moving cover of a song by Her Space Holiday, which remixed the two songs that follow. The first, “Aaron & Maria,” bristles with static and truncated beats, which nicely counter the soft vocal and keyboard washes; the second, “Know by Heart,” starts as a microchip funk tune before erupting into orchestral drum’n’bass; it might make a nice soundtrack to a short film featuring dancing Tinkertoy figures. “The Postman” and “We’re Computerizing and We Just Don’t Need You Anymore” are refashioned by Belgian texturalist Styrofoam into loping Eno-esque pop narratives.
