Veteran students give you the skinny on life in Sacramento

Whether you’re new to Sacramento or to Sac State or both, you’ve probably asked yourself some important questions. For example: Where can I get a good pizza? Is there anything to do in this town on weekends? Where can I impress that hot girl in my biology class? We asked these Sac State students who’ve already worked and played here for several years to give you the kind of veteran advice you won’t find anywhere else.

Asked at Sac State:

Robert Young

Major: Digital-video communication

Good cheap food?
Arigatos on Howe Avenue has good $2 eight-piece sushi rolls.

Best pizza?
Pieces on 21stSreet in Midtown. They give you big, fat slices and it’s really cheap.

Best place to see a movie?
I’m into filmmaking, so I’m supposed to be into “indie” theatres, but I still like going to Century [Stadium 14, at Ethan and Arden Way].

Best place for a date?
In the winter, maybe dinner at Ink [on N Street]. In summer, walk around William Land Park and then get an ice cream at Vic’s.

Favorite weekend activity?
I like to play soccer, or go see hip-hop shows at Harlow’s or Capitol Garage.

Best off-campus living?
You want to be around other students, so the apartments on La Riviera Drive are good. Midtown is the best place to live to be near lots of things to do.

Favorite radio station?
KSSU, the campus radio station. Also 101.1, because I like old-school R&B. And 90.3, KDVS, the campus station at UC Davis, is almost as cool as KSSU.

Good live music?
I like the Colonial Theatre on Stockton Boulevard.

Best place for clothes shopping?
I just buy T-shirts when I go to concerts.

Good cheap food?
Taco bell: It feeds an army!

Best pizza?
Giovanni’s on Folsom Boulevard.

Best place to see a movie?
I like to go to the United Artists Theatre at Arden Fair Mall because they give a student discount.

Best place for a date?
The Melting Pot. It’s expensive, so let him pay.

Favorite weekend activity?
River Cats games are fun, or going rafting on the American River.

Best off-campus living?
Really anywhere that you can walk to from campus.

Favorite radio station?
Other than KSSU, I don’t listen to much radio. The Eagle 96.9 is good. It plays classic rock.

Good live music?
Sterno Plaza on campus! We have live bands Wednesday at noon. I also like the Memorial Auditorium downtown. It’s big enough to attract good acts, but not so big that it’s too expensive.

Best place for clothes shopping?
Crossroads Trading Company or Pacific Sunwear.

Good cheap food?
This is lame, but Taco Bell. I love it and it’s cheap.

Best pizza?
California Pizza Kitchen at Arden Fair Mall.

Best place to see a movie?
Crest Theatre on K Street. Every movie I’ve seen there has been good.

Best place for a date?
Suspects Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre on the Delta King is really fun. The food is pretty good, and you can walk around Old Sacramento beforehand.

Favorite weekend activity?
I like to play tennis and golf. Mather Golf Course in Rancho Cordova is good.

Best off-campus living?
The apartment complexes on Howe Avenue. You can take the bus to campus to avoid having to drive to campus and park.

Favorite radio station?
I like 98 Rock. They play any rock except emo. Rob and Arnie in the morning are funny, too.

Good live music?
The Boardwalk is a good small venue. You get to feel the energy of the band.

Best place for clothes shopping?
Arden Fair. I like Banana Republic and Macy’s.

I try to get free premier passes. The campus newspaper has them sometimes, or radio stations give them away.

Favorite weekend activity?
Catching up on sleep!

Best off-campus living?
Anywhere that is close to a shopping center and next to a bus line so you can take the bus to campus rather than park.

Favorite radio station?
If I listen to the radio, it’s 106.5 KWOD.

Good live music?
The VIP room at Harlow’s has a nice ambience.

Best place for clothes shopping?
Target. It’s nice and cheap.

Best pizza?
I just get Roundtable because it’s close to my apartment.

Best place to see a movie?
Most people go to Century Stadium 14. Sometimes the campus newspaper has free tickets.

Best place for a date?
Macaroni Grill and Cheesecake Factory are good. Buca di Beppo, too. It can be quiet but lively.

Favorite weekend activity?
There are always clubs open around the city. During my first year I went to The Rage a lot.

Best off-campus living?
There are good complexes on La Riviera and Fulton Avenue that are close to Hornet Shuttle stops. That way you don’t have problems with parking.

Favorite radio station?
107.9 The End.

Best place for clothes shopping?
Either Arden Fair Mall or Old Navy on Howe Avenue.

Good cheap food?
Thai Palace on J Street near 35th Street. Also Vic’s in South Land Park—I love the hot caramel sundae.

Best pizza?
Roundtable, but you’ve got to go to the one on Mack Road. It’s the best—I don’t know why, they just put their hearts into it. I have five Roundtables near my house but I always go Mack Road.

Best place to see a movie?
United Artist Theatres at Arden Mall. Sac State students get a $2 discount. You can also get the discount at the one on Sheldon Road.

Best place for a date?
I like the Cheesecake Factory, it’s got a domed ceiling and lots of artwork. Sofia Downtown is nice and they have live music.

Favorite weekend activity?
On a summer day I like to take a picnic in the park—just any place with grass where I can hang out. I like to play miniature golf at Skandia off I-80 and Madison Avenue.

Favorite radio station?
103.5 for R&B and hip-hop, and 101.1 for oldies.

Best place for clothes shopping?
Forever 21 is the best store on the planet. There’s one at Arden Fair and Downtown Plaza.
