For those who like their paintings big, the current short-running show at JayJay, at 5520 Elvas Avenue, is a must-see. Well-known Sacramento abstract painter Mark Emerson is displaying seven of the eight works he created for a show earlier this year at the Huntington Beach Art Center, each painting measuring 70 inches by 70 inches. The work is visually stunning. The paintings are all exercises in color relationships and rectilinear patterns. Each surface has been masked over and over in varying dimensions of squares and diamonds, and, with the multitude of colors Emerson layers, it’s surprising how vibrant and interesting each intersection of color becomes. The overall effect is fresh and fun, with the viewer not feeling the amount of work that must go into each piece. The show, which went up on June 23, will be up only until Saturday, July 3, so don’t miss the chance to see these well-articulated abstract paintings.
