Pay attention, because the paintings of Margaryta Chaplinska are mesmerizing. Her portraits of people are expertly crafted, with visceral emotion shining through every countenance, and hair and clothing illustrated with broader strokes of movement, giving it palpable life. And the Roseville-based artist—who immigrated to the United States in 2003 from Ukraine—gives similar treatment to animals, like a trio of crocodiles that are in Sacramento Temporary Contemporary's Animal Attraction group show this month. The three beasts look like a mosaic of gemstones—quite a spellbinding triad of reptiles.
