Somber supernatural yarn about a young boy (Haley Osment) besieged by ghosts. Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan here mines the same territory explored by scenarist Bruce Rubin in Ghost
and Jacob’s Ladder
, though The Sixth Sense
spares us the goop of the former, and is less frenetic than the latter. Osment is excellent, as is Bruce Willis, as a melancholy child psychologist scarred by his failure with a similarly haunted youth, and Toni Collette, as the boy’s fiercely loyal mother.
