Short-run stage samplings

Several one-time performances and a small show with a short run highlight this week’s theater offerings.

William a. Parker is back in town with a one-man show that gets a single performance at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, at The Guild Theater (2828 35th Street). Theatergoers may recall that Parker emerged in Sacramento a decade ago, staging strong black theater productions. Parker’s play Waitin’ 2 End Hell (favorably reviewed by SN&R in 2003) went on to a New York production, netting Parker reviews in The New York Times and the Village Voice. Parker lives in Atlanta now, and he’s still writing plays. His upcoming solo show at the Guild is called Da’ Plantation – Racism… Time of the Gentile, and it’s steeped in Biblical prophecies and historic photos. There is adult content in it, so it’s meant for mature audiences. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.parkersplays.com.

Capital Stage continues its Playwrights’ Revolution series of staged readings on Thursday, August 7, with The Purveyors, by local playwright, actor and director Anthony D’Juan. There are more staged readings of other scripts nightly from Tuesday, August 12, through Thursday, August 14. Readings are at 7 p.m. at Capital Stage (2215 J Street). Tickets are $5. Visit www.capstage.org or call (916) 995-5464 for more info.

Acme Theatre Company in Davis is staging The Rememberer by Steven Dietz, based on the story of a young Native American girl who was taken from her home and put in a government-run school in 1911. Acme is a high-end youth-run company. The Rememberer’s remaining performances are at 7 p.m. nightly from Thursday, August 7, through Saturday, August 9; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, in the Richard Brunelle Performance Hall at Davis High School (315 W. 14th Street in Davis). Tickets cost $8-$14 and can be purchased at www.acmetheatre.net or at the door.
