An actual massacre of about 70 captured American soldiers under Nazi guard in Normandy during World War II is the springboard for this tale of survival and a sense of duty. Only four of the soldiers (a shellshocked, Bible-toting sharpshooter; his protective sergeant; a medic from Brooklyn and a Southern farm boy) escape into the snowy woods. They cross paths with a stranded British intelligence officer and must assist him in getting word to the Allies of a major German attack that is soon to be launched. The film dredges up elements from numerous war movies of the late 1940s and early 1950s and gives them just enough of a tweak to keep the trek suspenseful and the frothy drama compelling.
