Right this way!

We Americans love circuses, and we also love contests, so why not combine them under one tent? As you can see, that’s just what we’ve done with this year’s “Best of Sacramento” issue. Ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages, the show is about to begin!

In the far ring are the winners of our annual readers’ survey of the best our town has to offer in the way of shopping, food and drink, recreation, nightlife and other categories. A tip of the high hat to all those readers who sent in survey ballots.

In the near ring you’ll find our editors’ own picks of the things they like best about Sacramento. And in the center ring are the stars of the show, nine people who embody what’s best about the community of Sacramento. Some are educators, others are activists, still others are volunteers who give their time and energy to do good work. We interview each of them about what they do and why they do it.

The lion’s share of credit for Best of Sacramento goes to Contributing Editor Ginny McReynolds, who coordinated its production and conducted all of the interviews. It was a huge job, but she did it with grace and skill, and we’re grateful. The illustrations come from acclaimed New York City artist John Craig. Concept design is by SN&R Creative Director Don Button, and editorial design is by Art Director David Jayne.

On with the show!
