Scott McChane has been a quiet presence on the local scene since the breakup of his band, the Mac Swanky Trio. Nonetheless, if McChane’s new five-track EP is any indication, he has been busy writing brilliant songs. Accompanied by Adam McChane (also of Mac Swanky) on double bass, Gwamba (of Freight Train Riders of America) on mandolin and Eric Bianchi on electric bass, McChane pieces together a collage of quietly melancholy images. Melodic vocals push the material into a tender place—at times a mere whisper, other times a beautiful upswelling of emotion. This is acoustic minimalism from the slow-burn school of Richard Buckner and Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters), and it is clear that McChane knows his way through the weed-choked hallways.
