MyLab

MyLab

No music is safe from MyLab, the studio project centered around drummer Tucker Martine and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz. Together with such guests as Bill Frisell and Robin Holcomb, MyLab combines musical styles the way Dr. Frankenstein stitched together body parts, but with more sublime results. “Phil and Jerry” begins as an ornamental melody played on ngoni (an African lute), but it soon explodes into a gritty, hard-swinging jazz vamp with a stellar solo from saxman Skerik. Whining Appalachian fiddle and banjo meet electric guitar à la David Gilmour on “Varmint.” Eerie Fender Rhodes, tremolo-filled guitar and soul-tinged female vocals bring up the rest of the Pink Floyd flank. Headphone freaks who thought the Latin Playboys’ self-titled first record was the cat’s meow, this is for you.
