There are two ways to get your senses smacked around this Monday night. First, you can head to a local bar and grill for Monday Night Football, drink stout beer and consume a plate of nachos large enough for a family of four. Sure, you’ll hoot ’n’ holler, eat spicy jalapeños and curse that damn wide receiver who drops the ball after a play-action-pass on third and short with a defensive blitz, but you’ll also tempt a heart attack or heartburn. Instead, shock the senses with raw, provocative poetry at the Sacramento Poetry Center. Christopher Fairman, Frank Andrick, Wendy Rivera, David Houston and the Strings, and Sacramento poet laureate Bob Stanley will converge to offer all the elements to stimulate your Monday night: indie films, live music and, of course, poetry—for free. Besides, nothing smacks the shit out of your senses like poems by Josh Fernandez.
