Supervillain Megamind (voice by Will Ferrell) finally manages to kill his superhero nemesis (Brad Pitt). But he misses the excitement of battle, so he decides to create a new superhero—only he botches the job, turning out a villain (Jonah Hill) even worse than he is—now he has to be the good guy. It’s hard to believe director Tom McGrath, he of the low-class Madagascar movies, made something as subtle and clever as this; maybe more credit goes to writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons. Anyhow, this one isn’t for small kids; the story and pop-culture references are too complex, the jokes too Gen X and older. Anyone under 10 will probably be bored and confused. For others, though, great fun, with smooth animation and nice voice rapport between Ferrell and Tina Fey as a Lois Lane-like reporter.
