Jesus Is Not a Republican: The Religious Right’s War on America

Clint Willis and Nate Hardcastle, editors

From the guys who gave us The I Hate Republicans Reader—and what would Jesus say about that title?—comes an anthology about the misuse of Christ’s teachings for political gain by the radical right. The authors are stellar, including Sister Helen Prejean, Frank Rich, Robert Scheer, Bill Moyers and Ian Frazier. But the only folks who are going to read it already know that conservatives don’t have a monopoly on Christianity. Still, it has useful background information for progressives who may not be up-to-date on the Son of God’s politics; a section titled “Jesus is Not Afraid of the Facts” has a great essay on Terri Schiavo by Andrew Leonard and another on intelligent design by Michelle Goldberg. It’s a nice primer on progressive Christianity, but don’t forget to go to the source.
