Grandma’s Boy

Rated 1.0

A 35-year-old pot-addled video-game tester (Allen Covert) gets evicted from his apartment and is forced to move in with his grandmother (Doris Roberts) and her two elderly housemates (Shirley Jones and Shirley Knight). The chief value of this stinker is as a glimpse of how bad Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and The 40-Year-Old Virgin might have been if they’d been written by Covert, Barry Wernick and Nick Swardson, and directed by Nicholaus Goossen. Roberts, Knight and Jones are used for cheap old-lady laughs, but they have, among the three of them, an Oscar (and two nominations), a Golden Globe (four nominations), seven Emmys (11 nominations) and two stars on the Walk of Fame. It’s a record their co-workers here—all of them put together—are unlikely ever to match.
