So the advertisement I saw for Makosa described the group as “booty shaking Afrobeat and ‘Whirled’ music.” As in world music, methinks? Makes sense: Sacramento-based Makosa creates tunes that sound a bit like Orchestra Baobob, a bit like Latin dance. And sometimes, I hear its songs and think I’m listening to various TV shows themes from the late ’70s. It’s your call. The eight-piece group oftentimes grows into more, incorporating deejays and instruments beyond the usual guitar, percussion, saxophones and trumpets. As for vocals, not sure; you’ll have to check out its all-ages gig this Friday and discover for yourself. 2071 Natomas Crossing Drive, www.myspace.com/makosaband.
