Food Stuff

One look at the most popular movies, music and sports, and one would have to conclude that our culture values excess over subtlety. There are still some refuges for those who appreciate the little things, however, such as Taka’s Sushi at 18th and S streets. The quiet, residential location provides some of the appeal; it’s as though you have been admitted into a secret club. Entertainment is provided by the large windows, which look out over the mixed-use neighborhood. The staff takes care of you in a friendly and quiet manner. This is not one of those places where the sushi chefs are swilling beer with drunken patrons while engaging in knife play and blaring rock music. These are all little things, but they are a refreshing alternative in a culture that tends to say, “Super-size it!” 1730 S Street, 446-9628 (also at 11773 Fair Oaks Boulevard, 961-2118), www.takassushi.com.
