Laura Stevenson’s songs are full of wit and brash self-deprecation hidden within bright, poppy tunes delivered with a wink and a shrug. Some of the songs on her latest album Cocksure are presented in such chirpy, major chord glee that one might miss that she just called herself a piece of shit jellyfish. Backed up by a talented band that relishes their involvement in obscuring less-than-lightweight lyrics, Stevenson’s open-range melodies complement her tendency toward a vivid run-on sentence. Such writerly freedoms make for bold songs as charming as they are confident. 2030 P Street, www.laurastevenson.net
