Eight Gigs: John Németh

Fri., May 1, 9:30 p.m., Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub, $20

The 2014 Blues Music Awards' Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year recipient John Németh came to Memphis by way of Boise and a layover in Oakland, where he performed with Elvin Bishop. Németh's a crooner who blows the blues harmonica with the best. His sound and style recall the sounds of '50s and '60s doo-wop and soul-infused rock. He shifts gears to the swamp blues on “Country Boy.” Joe Turner, Sam Cooke, Little Walter, Marvin Gaye, Otis Rush and Roy Orbison resonate in Németh's work. He's a little bit Chicago blues, a little bit Memphis blues and a whole lot of original. 2708 J Street, http://johnnemeth.com.
