Art for the community

When you're out for a night on the town, it's not often that you're doing anything to help homeless people. Maybe a donated buck when you're stopped on the way, but not much more substantive than that.

That was the past. Now you can dance all night with local deejays and then check out and buy pieces from up-and-coming artists while you're taking a breather—all while helping raise money for an area nonprofit.

ReTREAT is a recently started monthly event at Blue Lamp engineered to give a platform to artists who generally don't get fancy gallery showings. Authenticity and dedication to their medium was a primary factor in selecting the participants. Between that focus and a part of the proceeds going to Loaves & Fishes after the party ends, the organizers behind ReTREAT are making a strong attempt at uplifting the community without being dour or guilt-trippy about it.

This month, on Wednesday, April 8, ReTREAT will have two live painting demonstrations, from Wel Sed and Rose P. Griffith, along with showings from Kylie Jackson, Matt Zlaket Photography and Reggie Sanders.

As for the music, the talent is booked by Intelligent Dance Parties and features REASON, DJ Mike Colossal and DJ R$HARP.

Plus, it's dirt cheap to get in—$3 if you show before 10 p.m. and $5 after that. Doors open at 8 p.m. and music starts at 9 p.m. (Don't bring the kids, as it's only 21-and-up.) Learn more at www.facebook.com/events
