Nevada’s bankruptcies climb

The number of bankruptcy filings in Nevada in 2009 rose by 58.6 percent, from 18,389 in 2008 to 29,170, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The rate shows no sign of slackening.

Chapter 7 (liquidation of individuals, couples and businesses) made up 20,955 of the 2009 filings, Chapter 11 (protection for individuals and businesses while they reorganize, usually used by businesses) made up 430, and Chapter 13 (protection for individuals while they reorganize) made up 7,785.
