Shane Acker directs this CGI animated film about a scientist who creates nine mechanical rag dolls to populate a post-apocalyptic Earth. The dolls find themselves in a series of battles with beast machines, and these battles are far more interesting than anything that stupid Transformers movie served up this year. However, rag dolls battling beasts is all this movie is really about, making it more of a visual experience than intellectual stimulant. Acker and his animators create superior atmospherics, especially when the dolls watch a film about the rise of the machines and the destruction of Earth. But the movie falls short of classic because it simply doesn’t dig deep enough. It features the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly and Jennifer Connelly.
